BLu-ray wins the hi definition format war - Feb 2008

For a while it seemed that HD-DVD was going to win the format war, but in February 2008 Toshiba announced that they would no longer produce HD DVD players and support the format, which brought the rest of the HD companies over to the Blu-ray camp for releasing hi definition video discs. In February 2008 the HD format wars were considered over, and the Blu-ray Disc format emerged the victor. There was much in the news over a couple year period of time, when the porn industry was used to sway the war for a hi definition format. The first stories I remember were talking about Sony not allowing porn companies to license or the blu-ray manufacturers to produce porn with the blu-ray format, whether this was true or not, the news came out during the CES show, and this led many people to believe that the HD DVD format would win the war, as porn is a deciding factor for many consumers, and the porn distribution was one of the factors in VHS winning the format war against Betamax.

There was much in the news, and even Diggnation video podcast announced that HD DVD would win the war since many porn companies started releasing hi definition video on HD DVDs. I’m not sure how it happened, but over the next year, some porn titles began to be released on blu-ray, and Sony insisted that blu-ray was going to be hot considering every playstation 3 was capable of playing them. But playstation 3 sales were not going well, and more and more HD content was being produced by the porn companies, and they were just as inclined to release HD content straight to the web and had no desire to be caught in another expensive format war. I believe that deals were made that allowed more porn companies to release on blu-ray, and with those announcements coming about the time of the 2008 CES show, along with big game titles coming soon for the PS3, it was obvious that fighting this war was just going to cost money and time, that could otherwise be used to make more money with a single format, so toshiba and the other HD DVD players basically conceded, consolidated, and now we can all relax and be ready to enjoy Blu-ray for years to come, without having to worry about it becoming another war victim like betamax.
